Independent Facilitation

What does a facilitator do?

A Facilitator’s role is to foster the effective functioning of a group in an impartial manner.

A Facilitator supports a group in making their own decisions without imposing their own opinions.

A facilitator guides a discussion in order to produce meaningful outcomes while balancing individual participation.

Some of the core benefits of professional facilitation include

  • A professional facilitator can help the group accomplish more in less time, eliminating the need for multiple meetings, and generating forward momentum on the issues under discussion.

  • A good facilitator can create an environment that will support the contribution of those who often say very little and of those whose views differ from those of the majority / leader. This ensures all in the room are aware of the various points of view, leading to a better chance of reaching a viable decision.

  • Lively discussions can produce a lot of ideas and information. While remaining neutral, the facilitator can summarise the various ideas and statements to help the group identify areas of agreement and issues that are still lack agreement or clarity.

  • After drawing out the full spectrum of ideas & perspectives, and welcoming strong opinions, the facilitator will encourage the group to generate creative solutions previously not thought of. Solutions that may resolve apparent disparities. The group is then able to design goals or agreements that everyone in the group can support and move forward having a sense of shared ownership.

If you’re planning a key meeting, a strategic planning process, a yearly review, a problem solving session, or anything else that would benefit from having an independent facilitator, I’d love to talk to you.

THE VIRTUE INSTITUTE | info@TheVirtueInstitute.com | TheVirtueInstitute.com

My organisation had the opportunity to work with Julie to develop a comprehensive strategic plan for 2024. As a new, ministry-focused nonprofit, we were experiencing a demand for services that outpaced our ability to establish the proper infrastructure, and we desperately needed a strategic plan within our organisation to address how to meet those needs. Now, we have clarity on what our priorities as an organisation are and how to achieve our goals and grow in 2024.

Working with Julie was not only enlightening and effective, but she was also personally invested in seeing our organization thrive and grow. She was a delight to work with, very knowledgeable in strategic development, especially for non-profits, and extremely hardworking. She went above and beyond to create materials and documentation to support our work and compiled a comprehensive two-year strategic plan synthesizing all our work together. Julie excels at her work, and it was a privilege to be a direct beneficiary of her knowledge and skills. We would highly recommend utilising Julie for strategic development for any organisation for a personalised and highly impactful experience.
